Food Ministries

At SRC, we work hard at living out the message of Luke3:11: “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” . We as a congregation are blessed to have enough to share and below are descriptions about how we go about living out our call to do so.

BAG LUNCHES

For almost 10 years we have taken bag lunches to downtown Grand Rapids. We make over 100 lunches each Wednesday, we give bags to Degage and Matthew’s House, we also rove around the Heartside Neighborhood to hand out bag lunches and water. It costs almost $2 a bag to make this happen each week. The bags include a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, an apple, cookies, a granola bar, and a bottle of water.

BACKPACK BUDDIES

Studies have shown that many students who receive free or reduced meals at school go hungry over the weekend; we bring a bag of groceries to students at Cummings Elementary to help solve this problem. SRC was the first church in West Michigan to start this type of program and many churches have since started similar ministries. It costs almost $10 per student each weak and we bring between 15-30 bags each week.

FOOD TRUCK

Each month we host a Feeding America food truck at SRC. These mobile pantries are like farmers’ markets on wheels, delivering a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and bread to people in need. We often feed over 100 families on food truck days. It costs $500 each month to host the food truck.
